I have recently been breeding std violet carriers to std violet carriers.

This obviously results in the offspring being either std - std VC - or violet.

There is no way of telling which stds carry - and which dont - until it comes to breeding from them (in time).

However, selling them as youngsters can be a real problem - as you cannot make any guarantees.

It may also mean that those people who buy them (in the hope that they are carriers) will not want to keep them once they find out they dont carry.

However, breeding carrier to carrier - does result in very good violets (or whatever recessive you breed) - from both a health point of view and a show point of view.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does it put people off breeding carrier to carrier?

Good post this Debbie.

Most of my carriers in my shed are bred to carriers.I also find they make better and stronger blood lines for breeding with to the violets later.

I do find that the kits of them are harder to sell.When people ask they want to know if it is carrying the violet gene i find.

Dont worry Debbie if you have any you cant sell just give me a shout i will buy some ;-)

The key is to find someone who is going to be happy to purchase either a std or a carrier (a rare person indeed).

I also find that they do make pretty good standards in their own right (ok - they are not "pure" - but some can be darned good - I won Reserve Best Standard once - with a carrier!!) :shock:

I think if people know and trust you as a well known registered breeder they will hold on to them in hope they will one day throw a violet in the litter Debbie.

Mind you - was thinking as I typed that comment above - things are changing nowadays and I find some of new breeders are impatient and are trying to reach to top bench the quick way.

Therefore this type of breeder may well become impatient and not prepared to wait so will sell the carriers which they bought from a breeder if no quick results.

There is a flood of chinchillas in our area at present - partially due to many more chin owners going into breeding.

An average to good quality male std is almost impossible to sell.

This concerns me greatly.

Despite best breeding practices - it is not possible to produce top ribbon winners 100% of the time!!! :roll:

Are other members noticing this trend?

I read this post with great interest! I am not a breeder, I have only 2 chins. Bella is a beautiful pet shop beige with problematic teeth :cry: and Bertha is a beautiful std ( poss violet carrier) from Aileen. Her colour is second to none, very blue and dark, she already weighs 515g at 5 months of age.. she is a prime chinchilla!! Standards have always been my favourite colour. When I eventually breed from Bertha ( something I would never consider with Bella ) I know I will be delighted with any resulting kits, violet or no :D
